Haven II Progress Report for August 2006
The guys decided to complete the veranda and carport before attempting those scary high gables.
The 12' X 80' front veranda will be a wonderful play area for kids on rainy days. Next task is to pour the concrete beams that rest on these pillars.
Once this is done, the guys will have to overcome their fear of heights and tackle those gables. Then, finally, we can get the roof on.
The remaining money will see us through the roofing exercise. Next we install all the electrical conduits and plumbing that must lie inside the wall before we plaster. I think we can handle all this, including plastering all the interior walls, with the funds in hand.
After that we'll need more money to finish the job. Next will be installation of the ceilings, completing all the electrical wiring, plumbing and plumbing fixtures, tiling the floors, painting, installing burglar bars and glass, doors, cabinets, and probably a dozen other things I haven't mentioned. Once the building is complete we will need appliances--washing machines and dryers, stoves, a fridge and freezer, dining room furniture, cribs and bunks...
How we need this new building! Kathi and I have taken in overflow from the Haven. Right now we have nine 2-year olds scampering around underfoot!

The Road North
road
People in Luapula province live close together. The highway is a social centre. Chickens, goats, children, drunkards, women chattering, overloaded bicycles, and casual soccer games all claim right-of-way. Motorists keep to the middle of the road, cross fingers, hold their breath, jam the horn to ON, and plunge through.
You know you are in Luapula when you cross Bangweulu swamps. Gape at a million ant-skyscrapers.These nests are tall enough to poke above water level during the annual flood.

When we stop for "comfort" along the way we often attract curious observers. This little guy had a homemade ball. Plastic shopping bags bound tight with string. "You want to play?" Thump! Swish! Kicks, dribbles and passes showed off their styles. That blue ball astonished me. So live! So bouncy! Misheck basketballed it along the highway. An imaginary dunk."That's the best shopping-bag ball I've ever seen!" I said to the kid. "How did you do it?" "Four condoms inside. I tie good." The Face of Congo!
