God Provided
Needing children’s antihistamines and antibiotics in rural Zambia, God provided what we needed, when we needed it and how we needed it – in an amazing way. During the 4th day of bush clinics, the pharmacy needed more antihistamine suspensions and antibiotic suspensions for infants and children. With few resources, we considered what we had on hand that could be used. We had the adult doses of medicines. – God provided.
We had a pharmacist on the team who
compounded special prescription medicines in the U.S. – God provided.
We had amber bottles in which we could put the compounded suspensions. – God provided. We needed a mortar and pestle to grind up the adult meds. A curio seller ‘happened’ to have several wooden mortar and pestles for sale. – God provided.
Even allowing for adjusting the medicines from adults to children, the liquids would taste terrible. We were able to use the flavor packets sent with the children’s Tylenol suspensions to make the newly compounded medicines taste a little better. – God provided.
God provided what we needed, when we needed it and how we needed it – in an amazing way – to aid these very young patients. |

Clean Birth Kits
With many women expecting to give birth to their little babies in mud huts on the dirt floors, the Zambia Medical Mission Team assembled and delivered over 350 clean birth kits (CBK).
Using information from UNICEF and Save the Children, we added to their basic list of supplies. Each CBK distributed included: a candle and matches, half a bar of soap, 2 pair of gloves, a razor blade and string for the umbilical cord, a baby blanket, wash cloth, pain relievers, prenatal vitamins, and a sheet of plastic to go between the mother and the earth. It seems so simple, but a woman who uses this kit is 13 times more likely to survive her labor.
The Zambian women receiving these CBKs were extremely appreciative. You can imagine the blessings this bring to their families and their villages as their precious little one is born. |
